HAZEL MALE - Shirley, Cheryl and Hazel are a team of three who volunteer for the VON SMART program in Brighton. SMART is the antonym for Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together. VON has a number of requirements for its SMART leaders, which include: no payment for service, a two month training program, CPR/First Aid training (plus updates), criminal record check, and participation in various workshops throughout the year that provide information about chronic diseases and working with seniors. These volunteers lead 56 one-hour classes a year, and added to that is the set-up and take-down time. They are invariably cheerful and encouraging to the seniors as they lead them through the exercise programs. The SMART program was designed for those who cannot participate in regular fitness programs so it is critically important for such individuals to get regular exercise to assist them in remaining engaged and independent. Presently, about 15 seniors participate in this program each week. This success is primarily attributable to the efforts and good humour of Shirley, Cheryl and Hazel. Due to a recent injury, Hazel has had to discontinue her regular leadership duties, but continues to fill in for any leaders when necessary.
TIM LARRY - Tim Larry, in his 27th year of teaching at ENSS and has coached thousands of students in basketball, cross-country and track and field. Tim is also involved in coaching soccer and hockey within his local community. This past year Mr. Larry celebrated his 25th Bay of Quinte track and field championship, while turning 50 years old. For half of his life, he has produced championship track and field teams. ENSS has also won the last 9 out of 10 COSSA championships in cross country. No other coach in the history of school sports in the Bay of Quinte Region has dominated a sport as ENSS has, and all under the coaching of Tim Larry. Tim is passionate about sports and this love for athletics is contagious among other staff and students. He believes that involvement in school and community athletics will make students better citizens. Tim is recognized Provincially and Nationally for his coaching and mentoring. He is the co-convenor of COSSA (Central Ontario Secondary Sports Association) and organizes track and field and cross country meets and events across Ontario. Currently, Tim is very involved in raising funds for a new track and sports field at ENSS and given his drive and motivation for ENSS and sports in general, they are bound to reach their goal.
ANNETTE OTTER - Annette volunteers endless hours to competitive swimming with NORAC (Northumberland Aquatic Club) and extends to the local school programs as well. For the past several years, Annette has volunteered her time to run meets for local schools, organizing other volunteers, doing the registration, managing the meets and making sure everything gets submitted properly. She is past president of NORAC where she has been such a leader in bringing a small club to the forefront of swimming in this area. The school program would not be as successful with the swimming program if it were not for Annette’s support and contribution.
DOUG PLATT - Doug first became involved as a volunteer in minor hockey in 1971 as an assistant coach, then advanced to head coach for 14 years, during which time he put in several years as vice president and president. When Doug was coaching he made a point of speaking with every team member after every game in a constructive way, letting them know that they made a good pass or whatever the case might be. He provided positive reinforcement for our young hockey players. For Doug it is all about every child succeeding. He would often recap a game showing as much excitement as if it were an NHL playoff game. Doug is now in his 25th year as tournament chairman and coordinates 9 tournaments every season. This totals more than 220 tournaments that he has organized, and, if you do the math, Doug has been volunteering for 38 years. Brighton has been truly blessed to have someone like Doug dedicate so much personal time to make such an important difference in the lives of generations of Brighton minor hockey players.
DAVE SOMMERVILLE - Dave has been providing residents of the Northumberland Community with sports equipment for many years. What separates Dave and his business from other stores is his kind generosity and commitment to community sports. No matter the event or the fundraiser, Dave gives unconditionally. His caring personality shines through any time students are in need of shoes or coats or kids needing sports equipment in order to participate. He is a true supporter of local community sports programs. Dave Sommerville is a business man but it is his love for his community and sports which puts him into a class by himself. Perhaps it was a tradition started by his father, but every community would love to have a Sommerville’s Sporting Goods Store and an owner like Dave. Dave goes beyond the call of duty in helping to facilitate sports programs in the Cobourg community and this qualifies him as an unsung hero. Many local athletes would not have had opportunities to participate had it not been for Dave Sommerville.
DAPHNE SIMMS - Daphne Simms has been a teacher/coach at ENSS since 1986. Ms. Simms has volunteered as coach to thousands of students in volleyball, basketball and track and field, and has won numerous championships over the years including Bay of Quinte, COSSA and placed at OFSAA. She has always focused her efforts around athletics and student leadership. Ms. Simms has single handedly raised money to repair and build schools in Nepal, through hat days at ENSS, bake sales and other events.
